What is the Yorktown ISD School Health Advisory council (SHAC)?
A SHAC is a group of individuals representing segments of the Yorktown ISD community, appointed by the school district to serve at the district level, to provide advice to the district on coordinated school health programming and its impact on student health and learning.
SHACs provide an efficient, effective structure for creating and implementing age-appropriate, sequential health education programs, and early intervention and prevention strategies that can easily be supported by local families and community stakeholders.
Benefits of Having a SHAC
1. Addressing the health needs of students through the work of the SHAC, helps meet district performance goals and alleviates financial constraints.
2. SHACs play an important role in communicating the connection between health and learning to school administrators, parents and community stakeholders.
3. SHACs can help parents and community stakeholders reinforce the health knowledge and skills children need to be healthy for a lifetime.
Every independent school system is required by law to have a School District Health Advisory Council; of which the majority of members must be parents who are not employed by the school district. Title 2, Chapter 28, Section 28.004 of the Texas Education Code athttp://tlo2.tlc.state.tx.us/statutes/ed.toc.htm details the specifics of this mandate.

Physical Activity Policies
Physical Activity for Students in Middle School Grades 6-8
To meet district physical education requirements for these grades the district offers physical education and other regular physical activity to students in middle school. For additional information on the district’s requirements and programs regarding junior high school student physical activity requirements, please see the campus principal.
Physical Activity for Students in Elementary Grades
In accordance with policies EHAB, EHAC, [and FFA], the district will ensure that students in kindergarten through grade 5 engage in moderate or vigorous physical activity for at least 30 minutes per day or 135 minutes per week. Notice of Physical Fitness Assessment Results
Notice to parents of students in grades 3-12:
Under Education Code 28.002(a)(2)(C), districts in the state of Texas are required to assess the physical fitness of students in grades 3 and higher. The assessment is conducted in the spring semester and results are reported to the state. The assessment and reporting instrument is known as FitnessGram, and an FAQ for parents is available at http://www.fitnessgram.net/faqparents/.
