Technology Replacement Policy
The District technology inventory will be reviewed at least annually by the Technology Committee to assess what parts of that inventory are approaching obsolescence and need to be upgraded or replaced. This assessment will include, but will not be limited to, the following:
· Teacher and student computers
· Network infrastructure
· Servers
· Printers, scanners, and other computer peripherals
· Camcorders and digital cameras
· Presentation equipment, including data projectors and televisions
· Software.
In addition to assessing the current inventory, this annual review will also include consideration of new technologies that might be used in addition to or in place of existing hardware and software.
This annual review will be conducted as part of the budget preparation process.
In addition to the annual review, teacher and student computers are currently on a six year replacement cycle, with the oldest computers being rebuilt with new motherboards, processor, and memory. Monitors, printers, and other peripherals are being replaced as necessary. Declining technology costs, ongoing local funding commitments, and the ability to rebuild aging computers instead of buying new units, should allow shortening this cycle to four years. Open Source software and Thin Client hardware configurations are also possibilities for cost reduction.
